Prime Day 2019

Amazon Prime Day will now take place on or around October 5, according to an email purportedly sent to the company’s third-party sellers.

The email seen by Business Insider and CNBC advises sellers to consider October 5 a placeholder date, ahead of an announcement of the exact date.

However, the date is much later than the September speculation and ever-closer to the Black Friday sales. If October 5 turns out to be the date, it’ll leave only seven weeks between the money spinning sales for Amazon and its army of sellers.

“A definitive date will be announced as we get closer to the event,” the email reportedly says. “We are looking forward to seeing submissions that offer the most delight to customers during one of the biggest shopping days of the year, Prime Day!”

In response, an Amazon spokesperson says: “We have not made any announcements regarding Prime Day,” but did not deny the email to sellers was genuine.

Amazon usually holds the two-day Prime Day sale in mid-July, but this year the company decided to postpone the event in order to focus on essential deliveries during the coronavirus pandemic. Given the financial strife many are currently experiencing, it’s not clear whether there’ll be much of an appetite for Prime Day sales.

Not that it’ll matter too much to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos who’s personal fortune has swelled to $172 billion during the pandemic, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire index. That makes Bezos the richest man who has ever lived, surpassing his own record and wiping out the $35 billion he lost in a divorce last year.

Amazon’s vast capacity and ability to get products to users quickly when physical stores were shuttered meant the company has been in a position to capitalise on the pandemic, which has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives around the world.
